Weligama is a famous beach resort in the south of Sri Lanka
Weligama
Weligama literally means 'Sandy Village'. The name is given
because of its sandy sweep bay. Situated in Matara district at a distance
of 143 km from Colombo, Weligama is a quiet fishing town, away from the
hustle and bustle of the city. Close to the shore there is an off shore
islet known as Taprobane where a dream house of French Count de Maunay was
built on. One can also see the famous stilt fishermen in Weligama.
